Maxine Clare started losing her hearing gradually from the age of 13, due to a hereditary progressive disease called Otosclerosis.
After years of wearing hearing aids, a failed surgery to try and restore some hearing and complications, all of her hearing was destroyed. Luckily, she was eligible for a cochlear implant which has been a great success and enables her to hear sound whilst lip pattern fills in context. "Without the processor I am profoundly deafened," she says. "That’s where my Hearing Dog Walter comes in, he’s my constant companion and sound alerter."
Maxine will talk to us about her experiences, life with Walter and the work she does with Hearing Link and the deaf community.
