Bird lover Sue Rothstein has led a successful and varied career as a freelance harpist, composer and harp teacher. Following her harp studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Sue’s career has taken her all over the world, working in orchestras and chamber ensembles.
She played regularly with the BBC Concert Orchestra, English National Ballet, The Ulster Orchestra and The Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife and worked under some wonderful conductors notably Vladimir Ashkenazy, Vernon Handley and Barry Wordsworth. She was a regular deputy for several West End musicals such as Evita and 42nd Street and has done shows with Petula Clark and Norman Wisdom. Together with Sarah Deere-Jones she formed The London Harp Duo performing up and down the country at festivals and functions, making live broadcasts for BBC television and sailing round the world on the QE2.
Many of Sue’s compositions are for harp and several of these are on the Trinity exam syllabus ranging from the initial grade to diploma level. Much of the inspiration for her music comes from her love of birds. Sue was looking forward to two of her harp solos (Hirondelle, Swallow and Ar drywydd Glas y Dorlan, In Search of the Kingfisher) being premiered in Cardiff this year at the World Harp Congress. Sadly like many events this year it had to be postponed, but is now rescheduled for August 2021.
Sue is the harp teacher for Junior Trinity and in 2018 was made an associate of the Royal Academy of Music. At our AGM on 14 October,
Sue will give a talk about her concert harp with demonstrations, followed by a short recital.
